father-mcgivney-cappuccio350On March 29, 1882 the state of Connecticut formally recognized the Knights of Columbus with a charter: 

“To render financial aid to its members and the beneficiaries of members”

Father McGivney was motivated to serve and strengthen Catholic families, by protecting their financial well-being. The insurance program is – and has always been – at the core of the Knights of Columbus and is a powerful financial engine that support much of the good work by the Knights.

In mid-August of 1890 – over 100 years ago – one of the largest funerals in the history of Waterbury, Connecticut took place. The throngs who attended were grieving the death, at age 38, of Father Michael J. McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus.

126 years later – Father Michael J. McGivney legacy lives on and from the first K of C council meeting with 24 charter members, we have expanded to:

• US, Canada, Virgin Islands, Panama, Puerto Rico, Poland, Lithuania, Mexico, Bahamas, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Philippines, South Korea and Ukraine.
• 14,500 Councils and serving 1,830,000 Catholic Families.
• Donated 71,500,000 Volunteer Hours and $173,550,680 to Charity.
• Paid out $7,600,000,000 in Dividends and Assets exceed $21,000,000,000.
• $100,000,000,000 Life Insurance In Force

In answering the Call to Service the Knights of Columbus continue to support Vocations, Coats for Kids, Food/Blood Drives, Habitat for Humanity, American Wheelchair, Special Olympics, Christian Refugee Relief, Natural Disasters, etc.

To continue Father Michael J. McGivney’s legacy – We have a program; it’s called Star Council.

• Columbian Award: conduct and report at least four major programs is each of the Service Program categories (Church, Community, Council, Culture of Life, Family and Youth).
• Father McGivney Award: gain a 7 percent increase in membership, or a minimum of four net members, as of July 1 to achieve 100 percent quota for membership. Double Star = 200 percent of membership quota.
• Founders’ Award: 2.5 percent net increase or a minimum of three new insurance members. Insurance transactions received, processed, recorded and released at Supreme Council headquarters by June 30.
